Kev Jones added another Masters medal to his collection with a bronze in the -100kg event at Saturday’s High Wycombe Masters.
Masters (or Veterans – Sorry Kev!) Judo is one of the fastest growing areas of Judo, with Great Britain having its own Masters squad, and European and World Championships for players. Needless to say, with his usual luck, Kev found himself competing against some of the best players in his age and weight group.

A determined performance from Jack Rogerson saw him fight through to a bronze medal contest in a large -30kg category. Jack was unable to overcome his final opponent, being thrown for ippon.
Fighting alongside Jack were Mieszko Polak and Marcus Tree, who both delivered excellent performances.
Joel Bassil was on excellent form in the lightest -27kg category, winning his first fight by yuko before scoring ippon with o soto guruma in his second contest. His third fight was hotly contested, Joel just being edged out, before he scored a huge ippon in his fourth. Frustratingly, his efforts were to no avail, as a combined score of 25 points was not enough to lift him from his pool into the knockout, other players with the same winning ration having scored 30 and 27 points.
Jonty Bassil was our final competitor, at -50kg. Despite giving away several inches, Jonty started strongly, and took the fight to his opponent before being held for ippon. Unfortunately Jonty was thrown and injured in his second fight. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Today’s results marked a massive improvement from the same tournament last year, with all players making serious challenges and showing how hard work and self belief pays off.

Lewis, who started his judo career at Cosham’s Court Lane Judo Club, won a bronze medal at -66kg in yesterday’s British University Judo Championships.
This marked a brilliant return to form for Lewis, currently studying zoology at Nottingham University, who had not competed for over a year after being knocked unconscious in a previous tournament.
Lewis came through second in his pool, to enter the knockout stages of the competition. A loss to eventual winner Thomas Johnson (LSE) put him into the repechage where he dominated all his remaining fights, to claim bronze with an ippon scoring throw on Sean Martell (University of South Wales) 1m 46s into the 5 minute contest.

Lewis is the 2nd player from the club to compete at the British Universities Championships, Brett Caswell winning gold at -60kg for Bath in 2005.

George Edwards represented the Club at the recent Northern Home Counties Mini Mons competition, held at the High Wycombe Judo Centre.
The competition was run on a knock out basis. George won his first fight by superiority, before a 2nd round loss put him in the repechage. In his third fight, George quickly scored a waza-ari, which his opponent worked hard to claw back, before scoring a conclusive yuko which eliminated George from the competition.

It’s not judo but Court Lane and ex GB judoka, Brett Caswell continued his professional MMA career with a points victory on Saturday 27th July 2013. A deserved win with several big “ippon” throws and dominating ground game.
That’s 2 wins and no losses as a professional, following on from an unbeaten amateur record. Judo proving to be a good base.
