Next Tuesday – 26 August – will be our final outdoor session before we return to the dojo on Thursday 4 September.
Well done and thank you to all the players and parents who have supported the sessions over the summer. Hopefully you have enjoyed the sessions and the players will feel the benefit when we return to mat based work, especially those who are entering the competitions in September.

Sessions will commence on Tuesday 29 July and run every Tuesday (weather permitting) throughout the summer, until we return to the dojo.
Any cancellations will be published via the website, Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Sessions will be open to parents and siblings, as well as club players.
Location
Sessions will be held on the open green space at Hilsea Lines. Car parking is available at the Portsbridge car park, by making a left turn immediately after coming off the Hilsea roundabout, southbound; alternatively park in Military Road (left just before The News Centre) and walk back up.
Time
1830 to 1930, approximately.

£2.00 per session
Clothing, etc.
Suitable for outdoor sports – school PE kit or similar would be fine, sensible sports footwear.
Be prepared to get dirty!

Player of the Month
The Player of the Month for June was awarded to Maddy Cox, in recognition of how hard she trained in preparation for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Games.
There was no presentation for May.
Marcus on the medal podium
Competing in the lightest, -27kg, weight category, Marcus benefitted from a bye in the first round, and followed up with a win by penalties in the second.
This put him into the semifinal, with his opponent withdrawing injured partway through the match.
In the final, Marcus’ opponent took advantage of a moment’s hesitation to secure a strong hold down and secure the win.

Not only was this was Aaron’s competition debut, it was the first Special Needs event that Hampshire Judo has run. The competition was well attended, players with a variety of disabilities competing together.
As always, Aaron gave his all, and was awarded with a well deserved bronze medal.
Crystal Palace, home of the Kent International
As the photo above shows, Crystal Palace is a massive venue, and for the Kent International is usually laid for 7 full size mat areas. Add to that the huge numbers that the event draws, the humidity from the swimming pool that is under the same roof and only separated from the “arena” by a walkway – all told, Crystal Palace is a daunting venue.
Jack started strongly, with a win in the first round, before a second round loss put him into the repechage. Jack picked himself up and scored another good win, before a second defeat put him out of the tournament.
Jack is showing a fantastic level of consistency, and has a good platform to build from.

Marcus won both his fights, one by ippon and the other by penalties.
Maddy, who was giving away a lot of weight, showed the same spirit in competition as she has shown in training recently.
The journey to Aldershot was nearly as adventurous as last year’s journey home…
The only disappointment on the day was the low entry from other areas, with only four teams entered in the judo tournament – the others being Eastleigh, Hart and Deane and Winchester. Portsmouth was the only area to enter a full team of 9 players, Winchester only having a team of 3.
*Mieszko Polak was also originally entered to compete in this tournament, however we realised late on that no reserves were allowed this year, and we had to advise 4 players that they would not be competing. Our apologies to all affected.
Next competition is the Kent International, which will see Jack Rogerson representing the Club, followed by the Hampshire Open.
Tony and Jon Patterson from Priory Judo Club have been working together to select the team to represent Portsmouth in this year’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Games.

Court Lane players in Royan
Tony, Andy, Simon, Jonty and Azhar have just returned from a trip to Royan, France, where they trained with the local judo club.
The visit was undertaken with Holbrook Judo Club, as part of the official twinning events between Gosport and Royan.
Whilst there, players trained with their French counterparts on the Friday evening and Sunday morning, before taking part in a “friendly” competition, where Andy, Jonty and Azhar all took on players considerably bigger than themselves and higher graded. All three performed with distinction, Jonty and Azhar scoring some good wins.
Andy also took part in the Monday evening fitness and newaza session, so look out for some new exercises and more variations on sangaku and juji gatame!
It wasn’t all Judo however, with trips to Blaye and La Rochelle forming part of the itinerary , we also took advantage of an opportunity to go sailing.
Royan will be visiting Gosport in 2015, with Holbrook hosting Judo activities.
