No Judo Thursday 14th July
Entry now open for Hampshire Split Grade Open
Entry is now OPEN for the Hampshire Split Grade Open, to be held at Eastleigh’s Fleming Park Leisure Centre on 31 July.
The competition features both senior and junior categories, split by grade and weight. For those seeking points for their black belt, the 1st kyu and Dan grade section is point scoring.
The entry form can be downloaded from the Hampshire Judo website. Entries can also be made online, details can be found on the Hampshire website.
Hampshire junior squad sessions
Boys team 2005 Intercounties
The following dates have been booked for the first Hampshire squad sessions:
- Friday 17th June
- Friday 15th July
Both dates are 19.30 – 21.00 Gym No 1 Brune Park School, Military Road, Gosport, Hampshire PO12 4AU
Coaches are invited to attend with their players and a Guest coach will be announced when confirmed.
It is hoped that once established there will be input from a number of coaches at each session, plus input from refereeing staff and possibly even some content for parents (table officials & volunteering for example).
Please advise me if you are attending so we know the mat area required.
Please remember it will require support if we are going to get things moving, come on Hampshire !
Update on Le Havre visit
Following on from our previous post concerning Saturday’s event:
- The Café at Brune Park will NOT be open during the day.
- There is an evening reception, being held at Fleetlands Football Club. This will involve an American supper – make a contribution and share! Please can you advise Paul Vella what you will be bringing along.
- Medals from the afternoon competition may need to be presented at the evening session due to time restraints during the day.
Tony appointed as joint junior squad manager for Hampshire Judo
Club coach Tony Brown has been appointed with Holbrooke’s Paul Vella to jointly manage the Hampshire junior squad. The decision was announced at the recent Hampshire AGM.
Tony has previously supported Hampshire Judo in a PR role, helping to set up the website and Facebook pages, as well as securing much local press coverage.
Both Tony and Paul are keen to return Hampshire junior judo to the level of success it enjoyed in the early 2000s – both Tony and Paul were involved in this, working with other coaches to lead busy Hampshire sessions and totally dominate the Southern Area intercounties tournament.

Many of the players involved during this time went on to secure GB representation – Brett Caswell, Andy Gould, Joph Spencer, Ben Garside, Vince Skillcorn, Craig Tullett, Sarah Patterson Sam Potts, Lewis Dolman, Lisa Stevens…
Initial training dates have been set and will be announced shortly. These are open to ALL players, not just County medallists.

Le Havre – Portsmouth training 4 June 2016
Royan – Gosport training 2015
As you know, the Portsmouth area are hosting a delegation from Le Havre on the weekend of 4-5 June.
The timetable for the weekend is as follows:
- French party arrive at Portsmouth Harbour 0715
- Training session at Holbrook 1000 – 1145. The session will be led by Sarah Hopkins. All players are welcome, a £6 mat fee will apply.
- This will be followed by a competition from 1230 to approximately 1400. We are envisaging some Court Lane players taking part in this – these players have already been approached, based on the grades of the visiting players; however any others who train in the morning may also be considered.
This will enable our visitors to spend some time with their host families on the Saturday afternoon and again on the Sunday, before sailing for home Sunday afternoon.
