Gemma Howell masterclass this Sunday!

Don’t forget, two time Olympian Gemma Howell will be running sessions for Hampshire Judo this Sunday!

As well as competing in the London and Tokyo Olympics, Gemma is a European Championships bronze medallist and has taken many medals on the Judo World tour, in Grand Slam and Grand Prix events.

This a great opportunity, not to be missed, and even better it is FREE.

All 2020 Hampshire Judo events cancelled

In light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Hampshire Judo have cancelled all planned events for 2020, it was announced yesterday.

Despite some easing of restrictions for outdoor meetings, social distancing requirements remain in place. The coronavirus alert level remains at 4, meaning that indoor events and training for non-elite athletes (especially in contact sports) remain prohibited.

It is hoped that a normal competition programme can be resumed for 2021.

Hampshire Judo 2020 events

Hampshire Judo have announced their competition calendar for next year.

All events will be held at Fleming Park Leisure Centre, Eastleigh

  • 29 March – Hampshire Closed
  • 12 July – Hampshire Red, Yellow belt and senior Kyu grade cup
  • 25 October – Hampshire Open and Adaptive Open

All entries will be via www.coubertinjudo.com.

Hampshire Judo news

The next squad session for Hampshire players will be held on 1st December at Fleming Park Leisure Centre, Easleigh. As usual, the session will run from 10 to 12 noon, with a £5 mat fee. All Court Lane Players aged 8 and above are encouraged to attend.

There is no November squad session.

Hampshire Judo have also recently relaunched their website – check it out at www.hampshirejudo.org.uk

  • 4 March Hampshire Closed, Osaka JC, Aldershot
  • 15 July Hampshire Red & Yellow Open, venue tba
  • 28 October Hampshire Open, venue tba
  • 28 October Hampshire Adaptive Judo Open, venue tba

Hampshire junior squad sessions

Boys team 2005 Intercounties

The following dates have been booked for the first Hampshire squad sessions:

  • Friday 17th June
  • Friday 15th July

Both dates are 19.30 – 21.00 Gym No 1 Brune Park School, Military Road, Gosport, Hampshire PO12 4AU

Coaches are invited to attend with their players and a Guest coach will be announced when confirmed.

It is hoped that once established there will be input from a number of coaches at each session, plus input from refereeing staff and possibly even some content for parents (table officials & volunteering for example).

Please advise me if you are attending so we know the mat area required.

Please remember it will require support if we are going to get things moving, come on Hampshire !

Tony appointed as joint junior squad manager for Hampshire Judo

IMG_5529Club coach Tony Brown has been appointed with Holbrooke’s Paul Vella to jointly manage the Hampshire junior squad. The decision was announced at the recent Hampshire AGM.

Tony has previously supported Hampshire Judo in a PR role, helping to set up the website and Facebook pages, as well as securing much local press coverage.

Both Tony and Paul are keen to return Hampshire junior judo to the level of success it enjoyed in the early 2000s – both Tony and Paul were involved in this, working with other coaches to lead busy Hampshire sessions and totally dominate the Southern Area intercounties tournament.

Many of the players involved during this time went on to secure GB representation – Brett Caswell, Andy Gould, Joph Spencer, Ben Garside, Vince Skillcorn, Craig Tullett, Sarah Patterson Sam Potts, Lewis Dolman, Lisa Stevens…

Initial training dates have been set and will be announced shortly. These are open to ALL players, not just County medallists.

Hampshire Judo announce details of Junior Teams event

hants2000~1The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed a Junior team event listed on the Hampshire calendar referenced in our last post – here are the details:

Plan for Juniors is as follows:

Boys:
u30 (min 25)
u35
u40
u45
u50
u60
o60 (max 73)

Girls:
u36 (min 28)
u40
u44
u48
o48 (max 57)

Red, Yellow and Orange Belts only (novice to 9th Mon). Minimum age 8, maximum age 15). Time is 09:00 weigh – in for 09:30 start.
Please register your teams by sending email to competitions@hampshirejudo.org.uk
Anyone not in a team who wishes to be involved should send email to the above address and we will try to include you if possible but it will depend on how many people at what weight.

This event will be restricted to Hampshire Licence holders only.

Teams will be allowed to play one Joker per match (of any age / non-competitive).

Cost: £35 for boys team, £25 for girls team or indivdual entry £5 per person.

We are keen to enter a team for this event which will run over three rounds – please let us know if you are interested! It is unlikely we can fill all weights, but there are several players who would benefit from this developmental opportunity.

Here is the Hampshire County Judo calendar planned for 2016:

  • Sunday 27th March – Dan Grading at Fleming Park
  • Sunday 10th April – Referee and Table Officials Course (venue TBC – probably AWE)
  • Saturday 16th April – Hampshire Closed Competition
  • Sunday 15th May – Hampshire Split Grade Competition
  • Sunday 19th June – Dan Grading at AWE
  • Sunday 2nd October – Hampshire Open & Special Needs Open Competition
  • Sunday 23rd October – Dan Grading at Fleming Park

All competitions are at Fleming Park.

Hampshire Team Championships (all at Fleming Park):

  • Sunday 7th February
  • Sunday 6th March
  • Sunday 3rd April

Juniors 09:00; Seniors 13:00 finish 17:00

Sunday 8th May – Southern Area Inter-counties at Worthing
