Hampshire Squad session this Sunday!

Hard work pays offSquad training will take place again this weekend, it has been great to have Court Lane players at every session, would be great to see a few more this time! Sessions are open to all competitive juniors, aged 8 and over.

My fellow squad manager, Paul Vella, recently circulated this message about the squads:

Please note that the next county squad training session is to be held this coming Sunday 23 October 2016 15.30 – 17.30 with guest coach Petra Piears she was a junior once and I remember her as a young teenager at Burridge JC many years ago, she did go on to win many British, European & World Masters titles.
We would like to remind all County juniors that there is no county championships next year and therefore the county training sessions will be used to identify players for the 2017 SA intercounties championships.
Full selection criteria will be publicised soon but you must be aware that we require all clubs and coaches to promote these sessions amongst their players as we do have our hands tied here.
The November training will be run by Danny Murphy also at Fleming Park (27/11/16) and then it is intended to move sessions to Osaka for January February & March 2017 subject to numbers attending.

Bronze for Jack at Hampshire Open

Jack on medal podium

Jack on medal podium

Jack Rogerson added to his burgeoning medal collection with another determined performance at today’s Hampshire Open.

Fighting at -38kg, Jack was one of nine players, split into two pools. He started strongly against an Osaka player, but was thrown for ippon when he was caught off-balance by a strong counter attack.

He bounced back to score three consecutive ippons, transitioning smoothly from tachiwaza to newaza in each case.  Jack finished 2nd in his pool and moved into the knockout stage, to face the winner of the other pool.

This was a tough match against a player from Summit. Jack did well to block two strong uchimata attacks before being caught for waza-ari with tai-otoshi. Jack was fighting his way back into contention when he was caught for ippon with uchimata, to finish in bronze medal position.

Dean takes bronze at Hampshire Split Grade

Hampshire medallistsDean Smith and Craig McGeever represented the club at Sunday’s Split Grade competition.

Craig made his competition debut in the boy’s red and yellow belt competition at -30kg. He was narrowly defeated in his first fight, conceding a yuko in the final seconds. His second fight went in to two periods of golden score, before Craig won on a penalty. Unfortunately this was not sufficient to take him through to the knock out stages.

Dean delivered an excellent performance, knocking his first opponent down for waza-ari with o-soto, before scoring a decisive ippon. In his second fight, Dean again looked dominant, and was unfortunate to be caught on the ground with a juji gatame. His third fight was shorter, being thrown for ippon with drop seoi nage. His performance was sufficient to advance him in to third place and a well deserved bronze medal in the adult novice category.

Royan - Gosport training 2015

Royan – Gosport training 2015

As you know, the Portsmouth area are hosting a delegation from Le Havre on the weekend of 4-5 June.

The timetable for the weekend is as follows:

  • French party arrive at Portsmouth Harbour 0715
  • Training session at Holbrook 1000 – 1145. The session will be led by Sarah Hopkins. All players are welcome, a £6 mat fee will apply.
  • This will be followed by a competition from 1230 to approximately 1400. We are envisaging some Court Lane players taking part in this – these players have already been approached, based on the grades of the visiting players; however any others who train in the morning may also be considered.

This will enable our visitors to spend some time with their host families on the Saturday afternoon and again on the Sunday, before sailing for home Sunday afternoon.
