Judo cancelled Saturday 13 August

With the current heat warning in place, allied to low attendance last Saturday, we have decided to cancel this Saturday’s session.

We hope to return for our final Saturday session on Saturday 20 August. Help will be needed after this session to move the mats from the Infant school to the Junior school – if anyone has a van they can make available it would be greatly appreciated.

Evening sessions will resume from Tuesday 6 September.

Inspired by the Commonwealth Games? Judo this Saturday!

Hopefully you have all enjoyed and been inspired by the extensive coverage of Judo at this year’s Commonwealth Games – if you haven’t seen it all, it is available on the BBC IPlayer.

The third of our Saturday Judo sessions is running this Saturday. Once again, a gentle reminder that we are in the INFANT school hall. The session starts at 1000, and runs through to 1115. Well done to those who have already attended – your support is appreciated. Adult and junior players are welcome.

We look forward to seeing you on the mat!

The sessions will be held in the hall of the INFANT school. Access is via the double gates in Court Lane, the hall is on the left of the playground.

Parking will be available in the Junior school as normal (the Infant school car park may be open), or spaces are usually available in Court Lane itself.

Usual mat fee applies.

Kev and Tony will be onsite at the Junior school at 8:30 to move the mats, if anyone is free to help us they will be most welcome!

No jacket required

As you are aware, an extreme heat warning has been issued for England and Wales for Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures possible peaking at 41C. (It’s already 24C writing this at 10am…).

Whilst it looks as if Portsmouth avoids the worst of the heat, we have decided to err on the side of caution and will take a relaxed approach to training on Tuesday 19 July.

Both classes will study the first set of Ju No Kata, a demonstration of gentleness and yielding that illustrates one of the key principles of Judo. The full video is available to study above, but you will see from the first set that the jacket is not gripped. We are happy therefore for people to train in just a t shirt if they think they will be more comfortable. Please bring water to training.

Hopefully Thursday’s session will return to normal.

We are delighted to announce that Judo sessions will run on Saturday mornings again this summer.

Sessions will be held in the Infant school hall, NOT Court Lane Junior. Sessions will run from 1000 – 1115 and will be open to all players, including adults. Adults will be segregated from the smaller junior players. Usual mat fee of £5 will apply.

Sessions will run on the following dates:

  • July 23
  • July 30
  • August 6
  • August 13
  • August 20

Normal evening sessions will resume from Tuesday 6 September.

Many thanks to Izzy Cordery and Kevin Elmes from Court Lane Schools for making this possible.

End of term is approaching…

The end of term is rapidly approaching – we only have a few more evening sessions.

Classes will run:

  • Tuesday 12 July
  • Tuesday 19 July
  • Thursday 21 July – final session – usually followed by a few drinks in The Manor!

As previously notified there is no Judo on Thursday 14 July.

Evening sessions will resume on Tuesday 6 September – whilst school reopens on Thursday 1 September, we generally find first day back is very tiring for the younger players and club attendance suffers as a result.

We are waiting to hear if we can run a Saturday morning session during the school holidays – this was very successful last year. It is very dependent on whether planned maintenance takes place in the school during the break. We will let you know as soon as possible!

Keep hydrated in the heat!

We’re sure you don’t need us to tell you it is hot today, and looks like it is getting hotter as the week progresses.

Please make sure you are sufficiently hydrated before coming to judo tomorrow, and bring a drinks bottle with you.

Midsummer shochugeiko training is a traditional part of judo training, with daily attendance expected – reputedly in some Japanese dojos you may find doors being shut and the heating turned on to make it even harder!
