Take your mum to Judo this Mother’s Day!

The next Hampshire squad session will be held on Sunday 19 March, at Holbrook Judo Club in Gosport.

The session will run from 1000 at Brune Park School, a £5 mat fee will apply. The session is open to ALL judoka, junior and senior, and is a great chance to meet and train with different players and coaches.

Your mum will overjoyed to spend two hours watching you train on the mat this Mother’s Day – so you’d better make sure you take her breakfast in bed first….

Back to basics with Olympic medallist Tanabe

Tony, Craig, Kev and Steve travelled to High Wycombe Judo Centre on 12 February for a training session with multiple Olympic and World medallist and six time All-Japan champion Yoko Tanabe.

The day was split into two sessions – ne waza and tachi waza (i.e. ground and standing techniques).

Yoko presented a range of simple, basic but effective techniques that will improve the quality of your judo – techniques which we ruefully wish we had learnt years ago but will be incorporating into our own coaching and practice going forward.

The day was very well supported, with a wide range of grades in attendance.

Hampshire Low Grade and Kyu Grade open replaced by randori session

As you will be aware from our listing of upcoming events, this weekend should have seen Hampshire hosting the Kyu Grade and Low Grade Opens. Sadly, for reasons that are not entirely clear, these events have been cancelled. Low grade junior players should now be considering the High Wycombe Mini Mons tournament on 20 November. It’s a nice venue, and only 90 minutes away.

The Hampshire events have been replaced by a randori session, open to all players (junior and senior). The event will run from 10-12 noon at Places Leisure in Eastleigh. A £7.50 mat fee will apply, all junior red and yellow belt players will receive a medal or certificate.

We would urge all players to take advantage of this opportunity to practise with players from other clubs.

Keeping safe this autumn

As we head into autumn, and spend more time indoors, it is inevitable that we will see an increase in Covid cases (indeed this is already happening) and possibly cases of ‘flu, as well as the usual colds, coughs and sniffles.

Whilst vaccination is very much a personal choice, please be mindful that you may be training with people who have health conditions that leave them vulnerable, or who may be caring for other people who are vulnerable in their own right. Also be mindful of the additional stresses that training when unwell can place on your own body. If you should feel unwell, please refrain from training until you are clear of symptoms.

Judo running as normal over October half term

We are planning to run classes as normal during the October half term.

We understand that some maintenance work is due to take place in the hall during this time, so there is a possibility that classes may be cancelled at short notice.

Please keep abreast of our social media channels – Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp group – or website for any changes to our programme.

See you on the mat!

Classes restart tonight

Evening Judo classes resume tonight!

Classes will run at their usual times, 6-7pm and 7-8pm, in the Main Hall at the Junior School.

We are looking forward to welcoming several new players over the next few sessions.

Please park in the staff carpark, accessed from Hilary Avenue. The Main Hall is directly in front of you, you will probably be able to see us through the windows! To access the Hall, please walk along the front of the school and turn left and left again into the playground. Doors into the hall will be in front of you across the playground.

Jackets are available for new players to borrow, please make sure long hair is tied back and all jewellery removed before stepping on the mat.

Final Saturday Judo this weekend

It’s the last of our Saturday judo sessions this weekend.

The session will be held in the hall of Court Lane INFANT school – access is via the double gates in Court Lane.

The session will run from 1000 to 1115, normal £5 mat fee applies.

We plan to move the mats back to their normal home in the hall at the Junior school after – assuming the Junior hall is accessible with the heating work that is taking place. Help with moving mats would be appreciated – especially if anyone can access a van?

Normal sessions will resume from Tuesday 6 September.

Quite a few people who promised to attend or asked us about summer sessions who we haven’t seen yet – hopefully see you on the mat this Saturday!
