Brave effort at South Coast tournament

Jack Rogerson was our sole representative at the South Coast Junior Green Belt & Under tournament held in Worthing on 22 January.

Like Azhar last year, he found this a tough competition, and despite a valiant performance, was out fought by more experienced competitors from clubs such as Moberley and Osaka.

Mixed results for Court Lane players

Jonty om Southern Area medal podium

Jonty on Southern Area medal podium

Jonty used the Southern Area Open on 12 November to make his first serious competition outing since 2014.

Fighting at -73kg, Jonty held Zodiac’s Herculas Pretorius for ippon, before facing Tonbridge’s Cameron Bradley for the gold medal. Jonty nearly won the fight in the opening exchanges when he countered Bradley’s uchimata for waza-ari with tani-otoshi.

Bradley carried on attacking, Jonty nearly scoring twice with uchimata sukashi, however it was Bradley who came out on top in the end, throwing Jonty for ippon.

This was a great result, and a well deserved silver medal for Jonty, against two players who were much more experienced than him. Jonty also put up a credible performance against an -81kg player who was added to the -73kg group.

Full results are available online.

Jack Rogerson, who is well on his way to becoming one of our most decorated players, fought a week later at the South Coast u16 Open. By his own admission, Jack turned in a curiously under-par performance and failed to get out of his pool. Never one to be disappointed, JAck is now targeting the Southern Area schools championships in January.

Bronze for Jack at Hampshire Open

Jack on medal podium

Jack on medal podium

Jack Rogerson added to his burgeoning medal collection with another determined performance at today’s Hampshire Open.

Fighting at -38kg, Jack was one of nine players, split into two pools. He started strongly against an Osaka player, but was thrown for ippon when he was caught off-balance by a strong counter attack.

He bounced back to score three consecutive ippons, transitioning smoothly from tachiwaza to newaza in each case.  Jack finished 2nd in his pool and moved into the knockout stage, to face the winner of the other pool.

This was a tough match against a player from Summit. Jack did well to block two strong uchimata attacks before being caught for waza-ari with tai-otoshi. Jack was fighting his way back into contention when he was caught for ippon with uchimata, to finish in bronze medal position.
