The school has notified us of new parking arrangements, to commence immediately. Please see the communication below.
We have reviewed our Letting procedures regarding the security and access to the building.
From w/c 6th March there will be no parking allowed on the playground and the gates will be kept locked. You will be able to park in the staff car park, next to the school office.
The small gate, next to the main reception door, will be open so that you can still walk across the playground to enter via the doors to the large/small halls.

Please do not use the doors directly into the hall from the staff car park – these doors are usually secured shut and require us to take attention from class in progress to open. It also increases the risk of rain etc. coming in on to the mats if these doors are opened during inclement weather.
In an earlier post, I wondered what the future would hold for the Olympics with the announcement that both Rome and Hamburg had withdrawn their bids for the 2024 Olympics, citing cost.
Now Budapest – host of this year’s Judo World Championships – has also withdrawn, once again citing cost, especially as they considered they had little chance of winning against the other remaining cities – Los Angeles and Paris.
Bidding for the Olympics can cost host cities several million pounds, let alone the infrastructure costs that follow a successful bid. Many would argue that the cost of Athens hosting the Just About Ready In Time 2004 Games contributed to Greece’s economic collapse.
The Commonwealth Games is also faced with a similar crisis. Only two cities bid for the 2018 Games, Gold Coast (Australia) beating a bid from Hambantota (Sri Lanka). The only city in the running to host 2022 is Durban, in South Africa, following the withdrawal of a bid from Edmonton (Canada). Edmonton is now concentrating on a bid for 2026. The Glasgow Games were reputed to have cost between £500m – £1bn to stage; a phenomenal cost in an age of global austerity.
There is no doubt that hosting such events brings regeneration and investment to host cities – Athens’ transport system, East End regeneration in London, Delhi’s subway system, long term tourist interest – but do these outweigh the costs of bidding and hosting? Have the costs simply become unsustainable, especially in the current economic climate? And lets not even talk about state sponsored cheating, and how the Sochi winter games and even London are now being tarnished.
Having attended the 2004 Games, soaked up the atmosphere, and seen humanity at it’s best, I hope these events have a future; but do have to ask, is a multisport event on a global scale now just too much for any one city to consider hosting?

Dean Smith made his competition debut for the Club, competing at the South Coast Senior Kyu & Dan Open in Worthing on 19 February.
In a very evenly matched group, Dean won one and lost two contests.

Previous Red Belt Rumble Medallists
There is still time for our red belt ninjas to enter the Northern Home Counties Red Belt Rumble, to be held at High Wycombe Judo Centre on 18 March.
Closing date for this event is 11 March.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of our new Club Welfare Officer.
Karen Miller – mother of Freddie and Wilf – has taken on the role of Welfare Officer for the Club. Karen has already joined the management committee of the Club and will undergo training provided by UKSport and NSPCC to equip her for this role.

Please note that this grading opportunity will only be offered to novice, red and yellow belt players.
We feel that it is important that those players who already have orange, green or blue belts, should spend time in their grades and grow into their belts. Recent competition experience has suggested that there is quite a gap in practical ability between our players and similar graded but more competitive players from other clubs.
Again, just a reminder that players should be seeking to engage in randori and competition that is appropriate to their grade!
Places now being offered to Portsmouth area Judo players 2 – 4 June 2017, training and more in Le-Havre with JPG judo!
This will cost £39.00 child and £79.00 adult, players will need to have adequate insurance as well, but this promises to be a good weekend trip travelling as foot passengers from Portsmouth International Ferry Port.

Court Lane junior players are invited to take part in a randori session at Holbrook Judo Club on 4th March.
As usual, the session will run from 10-12 noon at Holbrook Judo Club, Brune Park School, Military Road, Gosport.
A mat fee will apply.
Remember, the grading syllabus expects that you are engaging in randori suitable to your grade, whether that be in your club, inter-club, county, area etc.
As promised last week, our second session tomorrow (16 February) will focus on weapons – both their use and defense techniques.
We will draw on techniques from both goshin justsu no kata (forms of self defence) and kime no kata (forms of decision).
