Return of the Kent International!

Brett throws for ippon Kent International 2004

Brett throws for ippon Kent International 2004

Despite rumours of its demise last year, the Kent International is running again this year – at a new venue.  This two day competition – 27/28 June – will now be held at the Medway Park Sports Centre, in Gillingham, after being hosted by Crystal Palace for many years.

This has previously been a successful competition for us, with Jack Rogerson making a good solo effort last year.

This is a grade banded competition, but even so only suitable for those players with some competition experience already.

Full details are available from the Southern Area website.

Details of forthcoming competitions

Judo fightAs previously mentioned, the Hampshire Split Grade competition has a new date – 31 May. Amended entry forms are now available from both Hampshire Judo and British Judo websites.

This is an OPEN competition – meaning that competitors from outside Hampshire are eligible to enter. Competitors are split by grade and and weight – red and yellow belts together, orange and green, etc.

Another novice competition to consider is the South Coast Red and Yellow Belt Rumble, in June. This competition is held at Worthing Leisure Centre. Again, this is an OPEN competition.

As always, when considering entering a competition, talk to Kev or Tony first about the suitability of this event.

Azhar claims bronze medal at 2015 Hampshire Closed

Azhar on medal podium

Azhar on medal podium

Azhar Baree continued to stake his claim as one of the best young judo players in Hampshire with a bronze medal at -42kgs in today’s Hampshire Closed.

Apart from one defeat, in the second round to the eventual gold medallist, Azhar won all his fights with resounding ippon scores, including a nine second victory in his bronze medal contest.

Elsewhere, Mieszko Polak and Jack Rogerson performed well in the -34kg category. Both players found themselves in the repechage after defeats in the early stages. Digging in deep, they fought their way through to the repechage final, where in a see-saw contest Jack  beat Mieszko to progress to the bronze medal contest against the losing semi-finalist.

In a battle of attrition, the medal hung in the balance, before Jack was held for ippon.

Final results:

Azhar Baree, bronze -42kg

Jack Rogerson, 5th place -34kg

Mieszko Polak 7th place -34kg

Closing date for Hampshire Split Grade is nearly here….

Exclamation-Mark
Entry for the Hampshire Split Grade competition on 5 October closes Monday 29 September… it is probably too late for a postal application, but entries can still be made online at http://www.onlineentries.co.uk/events/hampshire.

We’d love to see a strong Court Lane entry, we have some very capable players in the Club who really could achieve great things with the right support.
