We were deeply sorry to hear recently of the passing of Chris Read in December 2023.
Chris trained with us as an adult beginner, gaining his yellow belt and becoming the fourth member of his family to take up judo. Wife Sue was a former judoka, whilst children Sophie and Andy also trained with us. Andy went on to join our coaching team and helped with the administration of the club, as well as gaining points towards his Dan grade.
Our thoughts go out to all of Chris’ family.

Court Lane has a proud history of players being selected to represent Portsmouth or Hampshire teams – Brett Caswell, Tiffany Caswell, Andy Gould, Andy Read, Lewis Dolman, Isla Savellis-Fry to name just a few.
We are delighted to announce that Chloe Lymer has been selected to represent Hampshire again in the forthcoming intercounty tournament against Surrey, Sussex and Kent. Chloe has taken the u48kg slot in the girls’ heavyweight team.

The Easter break was bookended by excellent competition results.
Chloe Lymer regained her Hampshire title at the Hampshire Closed held in Eastleigh at the beginning of the holiday. Three straight wins saw her comfortably secure the gold medal.
Chloe has upped her training regime, and is now also training at the renowned Camberley Judo Club.
Connor McCormack and Harry Webb made their competition debuts at the red and yellow belt event organised by Holbrook Judo Club. Connor came within a hair’s breadth of securing gold, but eventually had to settle for silver. Harry Webb secured a well deserved bronze medal.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games start this Thursday!
The Judo competition will run from 1-3 August. There will be extensive coverage via the BBC and iPlayer, as exclusive host broadcaster. The first session – knock out and repechage in the men and women lightweights – starts at 10am on Monday 1st, with the medal fights being held later in the day.
The home nations of England, Scotland and Wales will do well, possibly a medal for Northern Ireland. Australia and Canada are also sending some big names. You can never rule out a surprise result from India or one of the African countries either!
Did you know that Court Lane Judo Club has links to the Commonwealth Games?
Brett Caswell was training partner for Team England’s Sophie Cox in the run up to the 2002 Manchester Games.
The 1×1 metre mats that we use every session came from the same edition of the Games – they were used in the warm up area.
Outside of the Commonwealth Games, there is also a Judo Commonwealth tournament, which now features Junior and Veteran divisions. Court Lane’s Brett Caswell won the inaugural Junior Commonwealth tournament in 2006.
Congratulations to Chloe who was promoted to 10th mon (green belt) last night.
Since joining us as as a yellow belt, Chloe has won a number of medals and represented Hampshire in the Inter County tournament. This is the next step on Chloe’s judo journey, we are very proud of you Chloe – well done!
Chloe will be competing at the Kent International this weekend.
Belated congratulations also to Hani, who was awarded 1st Sho at the end of May.
Just a quick reminder as we move into our next phase of grading, the BJA has published a host of grading resources online. These include videos, and downloadable copies of Sho, Mon and Kyu syllabi.
Please make sure your contact details are up to date on The Dojo, the BJA’s online membership system – this is migrating to a new system starting this Saturday and will be off line for about three weeks. Details can be amended and new memberships taken out until end of day Friday.
Due to the Dojo outage, there will be a delay registering grades with the BJA – so please remember to bring in your licence book so that this can be updated with grade details. This will be the only proof of grade until The Dojo is back up and running.
