That’s a wrap for 2022!

Thursday was the last day of our training programmed for 2022.

The club has continued to grow throughout the year, with a new group of adults also joining us. Our recovery from the pandemic has been better than we could ever have anticipated.

The club has returned to competition during the year, something we hope to see more of next year. It has been exciting also to see a number of players progress to their next colour belt.

It is with considerable sadness that we say goodbye to German, who is returning home to Ukraine. A talented and hard working judo player, German will be missed and we wish him and his mum well for the future.

Classes will resume from Thursday 5 January.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Gradings start next week!

First of all, an apology that so many of you have had to wait so long to 1. get your grade registered, 2. receive confirmation of your grade. Sadly, the situation has been out of our hands – a major software change at British Judo then a lack of grading packs. Hopefully everyone has now received the confirmation of their grade.

We will start running gradings again from next week – this will probably take us up to end of term (provisionally 15 December, waiting for school to confirm).

If presenting yourself for your grade, please show a valid British Judo membership card and have the correct grading fee.

Hampshire Low Grade and Kyu Grade open replaced by randori session

As you will be aware from our listing of upcoming events, this weekend should have seen Hampshire hosting the Kyu Grade and Low Grade Opens. Sadly, for reasons that are not entirely clear, these events have been cancelled. Low grade junior players should now be considering the High Wycombe Mini Mons tournament on 20 November. It’s a nice venue, and only 90 minutes away.

The Hampshire events have been replaced by a randori session, open to all players (junior and senior). The event will run from 10-12 noon at Places Leisure in Eastleigh. A £7.50 mat fee will apply, all junior red and yellow belt players will receive a medal or certificate.

We would urge all players to take advantage of this opportunity to practise with players from other clubs.

Keeping safe this autumn

As we head into autumn, and spend more time indoors, it is inevitable that we will see an increase in Covid cases (indeed this is already happening) and possibly cases of ‘flu, as well as the usual colds, coughs and sniffles.

Whilst vaccination is very much a personal choice, please be mindful that you may be training with people who have health conditions that leave them vulnerable, or who may be caring for other people who are vulnerable in their own right. Also be mindful of the additional stresses that training when unwell can place on your own body. If you should feel unwell, please refrain from training until you are clear of symptoms.

We are planning to run classes as normal during the October half term.

We understand that some maintenance work is due to take place in the hall during this time, so there is a possibility that classes may be cancelled at short notice.

Please keep abreast of our social media channels – Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp group – or website for any changes to our programme.

See you on the mat!

Gradings update

As you are probably aware, the BJA implemented a new membership system over the summer (“the Dojo”).

Like you, we were expecting a fully developed and configured system to be unveiled, especially as the go live date was put back.

Not the case however! All that has been launched so far is a minimum product, that enables members to check their own details and renew licence. There are no coach or club modules currently available, meaning that we are unable to process the grading results from July. BJA staff are also unable to process gradings at Head Office. It is hoped that this functionality will be rolled out shortly.

We apologise for the delay in players receiving this new grades, sadly the situation is out of our hands. As soon as we can submit new grade information we will do so.

Having worked on a new IT system configuration for the last two years, and just entering the really interesting stage of assisted migration runs, User Acceptance Testing and parallel running – it is disappointing to see the delays and gaps in the new Dojo system.
