Committee members sought

As our numbers continue to grow across both junior and adult sections, we are keen to re-establish activities off the mat.

Tony and Kev have been been covering most admin functions for some time now, and feel that the time is right to look to actively reinstate a management committee to shape and drive the club forward.

To that end, we are seeking volunteers for the following roles:

  • Club Chair
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary

We have a volunteer lined up for the Welfare Officer role, and are looking for a suitable training course in the area.

We need a committee to manage club admin, player and volunteer recruitment and retention, finance, socials and website management… if you can help us please talk to Tony or Kev.

A three mat system will be in place this weekend to allow for the growing numbers of attendees.

The Hampshire Championships are fast approaching, so this is a great opportunity to get some extra training in.

Overheard…

I overheard an interesting conversation whilst walking the dogs the other day that got me thinking.

Three joggers were puffing their way along the road, and moaning that an event was offering wooden medals…

Personally, I thought the idea of a wooden medal was quite different and I would be quite intrigued by it. It also made me wonder, what is the motivation for entering the event in the first place? Is it just in pursuit of medals – these were hardly elite runners. Or should you be entering for the experience, the chance to see if you have improved your time, that you have bettered your self?

Looking to get into competition?

If you are thinking of getting into competition – firstly make sure you have an BJA membership.

Details of competitions within the Southern Area (Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and Kent) are published on the calendar of the Southern Area website.

The Southern Area website also links to the main British Judo events page, detailing courses and competitions across the country.

As most entries are now online, we no longer print and circulate entry forms.

Details of smaller, club based events may be circulated locally.

Always check with the Club coaches about suitability of an event before entering.

Chris Read

We were deeply sorry to hear recently of the passing of Chris Read in December 2023.

Chris trained with us as an adult beginner, gaining his yellow belt and becoming the fourth member of his family to take up judo. Wife Sue was a former judoka, whilst children Sophie and Andy also trained with us. Andy went on to join our coaching team and helped with the administration of the club, as well as gaining points towards his Dan grade.

Our thoughts go out to all of Chris’ family.

Easter Judo

The school have confirmed that as there will be no site staff working evenings over the Easter holidays, the club will not be able to run over the holiday period.

As we are aware the Thursday before Good Friday has been nominated as an INSET day (Thursday 28 March) and many people will take advantage to get away for Easter early, our last session before Easter will be Tuesday 26 March. The Club will re-open on Tuesday 16 April.
