Bronze medal for Dean at Hampshire Open
Forget Mayweather v MacGregor, the real action is in Budapest
The media may be whipping itself into a frenzy over the farcical Mayweather v MacGregor fight – that threatens to drag boxing and MMA into even more ridicule – but judo fans are concentrating on the Central European country of Hungary and its capital city Budapest.
The 2017 World Championships kicks off on Monday 28 August, with the action being streamed live via the International Judo Federation website.
The timetable can be found on the Championships website. The action will commence with the lightest weights (-48kg women, -60kg men) and culminate with a team event Sunday 3 September.
British Judo has announced a 12 strong team for the event, including 6 Olympians. Great Britain has won several World Championship medals, although our last was far too long ago!
Volunteer mat layers wanted!
Mat area
Assistance is required with laying mats during September, as Kev and Craig will be away.
If anyone can commit to being at the school on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 1740 to help with laying mats, their assistance would be greatly appreciated. Due to Tony’s work location and travel times, you may be required to hold the key for the mat cupboard and start laying mats on your own.
If anyone can assist, please speak to Tony before classes break up.
Summer training programme
Judo training
The Club will be open on the following nights in July:
- Tuesday 4 July
- Thursday 6 July
- Tuesday 11 July
- Thursday 13 July – final Thursday session until September!
- Tuesday 18 July
- Thursday 20 July – NO JUDO due to school show
- Tuesday 25 July
At present we are scheduled to close until September following the session on 25 July.
We are exploring with the school the possibility of continuing to run a Tuesday night session throughout the summer, as we used to do. (It is only availability of a school keyholder that stops us).
If we are unable to do this, we will run fitness session at Hilsea Creek as per the last three years.
Junior mat fee increase
Please note that as of September, junior mat fees will rise to £5.00 per session. A second session on the same evening will be held at £2.00.
Senior mat fees are unchanged (at £5.00).
We are aware of the impact this will have financially on families who have two or more children attending and are considering a number of schemes to offer discounted fees for additional children.
You can help us to offset additional fee increases by supporting the club through the various schemes offered on our fundraising pages.
Forthcoming Hampshire squad sessions
Jack, Isla and Kaiden all attended the last Hampshire squad session, which attracted 40 players.
The next Hampshire County Junior training session is 10.00 – 12.00, Sunday 16th July at Maida Gym (the home of Osaka Judo Club), Queens Avenue, Aldershot, GU11 2BT, (or SAT NAV users use Scarletts Road, Aldershot, GU11 4AE which is more SAT NAV friendly).
The session is once again open to all Hampshire junior Judo players and the mat fee will be £5.00 per player.
The session will see the handover of the Boys Southern area intercounties cup (currently held by Fleming Park) to the next club who helped the boys to victory at this year’s competition.
Future training sessions have been planned:
- September 10th at Osaka which will be combined with a visit by Surrey squad (the return will most likely be early 2018 in Croydon);
- October 8th in Chichester with Sussex squad (again we will plan a return visit to Hampshire sometime in the Spring 2018).
Further decisions will be made on Hampshire only trainings for November & December plus early 2018 as soon as dates and venues have been identified.
Next Hampshire squad session to be held in Gosport
Following on from a gold medal winning performance at the recent Southern Area intercounties tournament, the next Hampshire Squad session will be held this Friday (16th June) at Holbrook Judo Club, details below:
- Time: 19.30 – 21.00
- Location: Gym no 1, Brune Park School, Military Road, Gosport, PO12 3BU.
- Mat fee: £5.00.
Jack and Jonty have supported the squad from the beginning, with Jack being selected as reserve for the intercounty tournament. Sam and Jacob have also attended. It would be fantastic to see more Court Lane players attending.
Classes resume this week
After the interruptions of May half term and the General Election, normal classes resume this week.
Please note however that the Tuesday evening adult class is still suspended.
Adult class suspended
Reluctantly we have decided to suspend our Tuesday adult class.
Recent numbers have not justified or covered the cost of hall hire – Andy has moved out of the area, Matt is at University, and those we would look at moving up to this session (Jonty, Azhar) are deep into examinations. As a consequence, Dean has sometimes been the only attendee.
Any adult players wishing to train should therefore please attend 7-8pm on Tuesday, they are also welcome at the 7-8pm Thursday session.
We hope to restart the Tuesday adult session in September.
