Hampshire Closed to return in 2018

Hampshire Judo will once again be hosting a Closed tournament in 2018.

The date has been provisionally set for 4 March, with medallists being invited to attend future Hampshire squad sessions.

In our 25th year, it would be great to see a large entry for this event – it has traditionally been a successful event for Court Lane. Azhar and Jack (with a 10 fight epic in 2016) have been amongst our most recent medallists.

Challenging start to year for Court Lane players

12662523_10153867573871774_2413798890833781935_nCourt Lane players have made a busy start to the year.

Jonty Bassil and Azhar Baree competed at the Green Belt & Under competition in Worthing in January.

Jonty, making his first serious competition appearance for two years, made a strong showing, winning two and losing two to finish fifth, losing the bronze medal fight. Along the way he scored a spectacular 5 second ippon!

Azhar set himself an uphill challenge, losing his first fight. His second fight was far better, Azhar scoring a yuko early on before conceding a waza-ari with seconds left on the clock.

Today saw Xander Harris, Sam Boichot and Mieszko Polak compete in the inaugural Hampshire Junior Team Championships. With only half a team, winning the day was never a realistic prospect, with experience being the main goal. All three players acquitted themselves well, and were a credit to the club.

Azhar maintains medal form at Hampshire Open

medalsAzhar Baree maintained his medal winning form with a bronze medal at this year’s Hampshire Open.

The only entrant from the Club, Azhar was fighting at a new weight of -46kg, in a pool of 5.

A decisive win in the first round, with two waza-ari throws, and then a hard fought win on penalties against a left handed player, saw him secure third place.

Azhar puts Club back on international map

Azhar - Bronze medal winner at Kent International 2015

Azhar – Bronze medal winner at Kent International 2015

Azhar Baree put Court Lane Judo Club back on to the international scene with a bronze medal at today’s Kent International. Following rumours of its demise last year, the Kent International has made a successful transition to Medway Park in Gillingham.

Competing at -42kg, in the orange and green belt category, Azhar benefitted from a bye in the first round. His first contest was against a player from Bradley Stoke, Azhar made short work of it, scoring two waza-aris from an ippon seoi / ko uchi combination.

His second fight pitched him against Lim of Belgium, who had looked dangerous in his first two fights. Azhar however scored a perfect ippon throw within the first moments of their contest, taking Lim backwards and flat on his back.

Through to the semifinal, Azhar faced another Bradley Stoke player, and this time came undone, being thrown for two waza-aris with drop seoinage.

After a wait for the repechage to be finished, Azhar again faced Lim in the bronze medal contest. Once again, Azhar took him back, scoring waza-ari before securing a hold to secure the win and our first medal at this competition since 2009.

Commenting afterwards, a tired but ecstatic Azhar echoed Jack Rogerson last year, describing the Kent as the hardest competition he has contested to date.

Veterans and Split Grade success for Court Lane

medalsA busy weekend of competition for Court Lane players saw them return with medals from two competitions.

On the Saturday, club coach Kevin Jones returned to competition at the High Wycombe Masters, claiming a bronze medal. This event attracted a strong international entry.

Sunday saw the action shift to Eastleigh, with Mieszko Polak, Jack Rogerson and Azhar Baree all competing in the Split Grade Open.

Mieszko performed admirably in his pool, in the red and yellow belt section, and was unlucky not to progress through to the knock out stages, just not quite amassing enough wins/points.

In the orange/green belt categories –

Jack Rogerson claimed a silver medal at -38kg, proving once again that he is one to watch, with a particularly pleasing ko uchi gari for waza-ari during golden score.

Just missing the cut off point for -42kg, Azhar was forced to move up a weight, to -46kg; then found his group merged with -50kg! He just missed a spectacular gold medal in his weight, a superb throw being launched after a call of matte, and had to settle for silver. He battled hard against the heavier players, and scored a pleasing win his last fight.

A one minute silence was held in honour of Roy Inman OBE.

Final results:

High Wycombe Masters – Kevin Jones, bronze

Hampshire Split Grade Open – Jack Rogerson, silver -38kg (orange/green belts); Azhar Baree, silver -46kg (orange/green belts)
